Each semester, CAELC offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to UVA students, faculty, staff, researchers, and members of the local community. To find out more about the classes we offer, review the options below. Please keep in mind that some classes are only open to certain populations in the UVA community. Read the descriptions to find out more!
Undergraduate ESL Classes
CAELC provides an undergraduate writing course (ENWR 1510) for non-native speakers. Who can participate? Undergraduate students at UVA.
Graduate ESL Classes
CAELC offers ESL classes to international graduate students at the University of Virginia. Who can participate? Graduate students at UVA and UVA staff/researchers.
Community English Classes
At the Lorna Sundberg International Center, we offer English classes to members of the Charlottesville community for a fee. Who can participate? UVA affiliates and community members.
Summer EAP Program
EAP is an intensive language and culture course offered for a fee. It is designed to introduce the academic environment and grounds to incoming students. Who can participate? Incoming UVA students and affiliates (if space is available)
Individualized Classes
CAELC offers individualized classes in both writing and oral for a fee. Students can arrange to meet with an instructor for two hours per week. Who can participate? UVA faculty, staff, researchers, and visiting scholars.
Workplace Program
UVA employees are paired with volunteer tutors within a professionally supervised workshop setting and can work on their own English needs and goals. The program works with managers and supervisors to address needs of the workplace.
