Summer Workplace English Program
Spend your summer helping UVA employees with digital literacy, English language support, and conversation practice!
Many UVA service employees are refugees and immigrants who have resettled in Charlottesville to make a better life for themselves. The Workplace English Program provides essential English language assistance to these individuals. Throughout a 4-week period over the summer, Instructional Assistants guide weekly English sessions for small groups of employees, offering ongoing support and during the week.
Duties and Expectations
Summer Workplace English Instructional Assistants work closely with small groups of English language learner UVA employees for the duration of the program. Responsibilities of Instructional Assistants include:
- Planning and preparing one-hour weekly English lessons using provided curriculum and resources.
- Leading the one-hour weekly English lesson for their assigned group of English learners.
- Discussing and reviewing lessons with the Workplace English leadership team.
- Keeping regular contact with each English learner throughout the week using voice and video messages via WhatsApp to encourage ongoing English practice.
- Maintaining detailed records of each learner's progress throughout the 4-week program and writing a summary report for each learner.
The 2025 Summer Workplace English Program weekly sessions take place on UVA Grounds during Summer Session II.
- Tuesdays, 5:30-7:30 PM in the Law School library
- Dates: June 17, 24, July 1, July 8
- Wednesdays, 12-2 PM in New Cabell Hall
- Dates: June 18, 25, July 2, July 9
Eligibility Requirements
The following are required components of the position:
- 4 hours per week during the 4-week summer program, along with one pre-program training.
- IA candidates can request participation in both sessions (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), increasing expected hours to 8 hours per week.
- Pre-program training: evening of June 12 (online)
- Enrollment at UVA as an undergraduate or graduate student.
Compensation
IAs will receive an hourly undergraduate/graduate wage for the duration of the program.
- Hourly wages: $14 undergraduate, $17 graduate.
