Welcome to CAELC

English as a Second Language (ESL) services at the University are offered through the Center for American English Language and Culture (CAELC). CAELC is charged both to provide leadership on issues related to ESL/intercultural communication and to help members of the University of Virginia community attain the level of linguistic and cultural proficiency needed for success at a research university in the United States.

January 18th: The UVELPE (University of Virginia English Language Proficiency Exam) will be held on January 18th, 2019 from 2:30-5 in New Cabell Hall, room 299.   Please contact caelc@virginia.edu as soon as possible if you need this exam.  All international graduate students whose first language is one other than English and who were required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores are required to take this 2.5 hour test of English proficiency.  Please contact caelc@virginia.edu as soon as possible if you need this exam.  The registration form can be found at this link.

The Next SPEAK Administration will be on December 13th.  The SPEAK Test will be administered in New Cabell Hall room 299. Students will be registered for this test by their departments. Please contact caelc@virginia.edu if you believe you need this test.

CAELC Classes began the week of Sept 10th and end December 7th.  Course recommendations for next semester will be mailed in January.
