English Conversation Partners

MEET WITH A UVA LANGUAGE CONSULTANT

Would you like to practice your English with a UVA English speaker for one hour every week? Together you can have lunch, walk around grounds, or meet for coffee. CAELC’s VISAS Program (Volunteers with International Students, Staff, and Scholars) will match you with an English speaker for conversation practice and cultural exchange.

If you are an international student, employee, researcher, faculty member, or family member of a UVA affiliate looking for relaxed English language practice and cultural exchange, please register to meet with a Language Consultant.

Register for a Language Consultant here. Registration for the Spring 2024 semester closes on Sunday, January 28 at 11:59 PM.

Volunteers with International Students, Staff, and Scholars (VISAS) is a volunteer organization at the University of Virginia that organizes a variety of programs for speakers of other languages who would like to practice English and intercultural exchange. VISAS has two free programs that you can participate in: the Language Consultant program and VISAS Café. We encourage you to participate in BOTH programs!

What are Language Consultants?

Student Language Consultants (LCs) are English conversation partners who are interested in getting to know international students, staff, scholars and their significant others. They offer you the opportunity to practice your English, learn more about US culture, and/or make new friends. In exchange, they are interested in getting to know more about you and your culture.

Program participants are matched with an LC (and often, one other international participant) to meet with for an hour each week throughout the semester. You and your LC get to decide the place and time that is most convenient and comfortable for the both of you!

My time with the VISAS Program must be one of the unforgettable time during my stay in America. ~G.T., international student, Spring 2016
